Plot

Invisible Scientist: The Story of Sebastian

So friends, welcome to another interesting story today. This story is about a brilliant scientist who created a formula that could make a person invisible. He tested this formula on himself, and with this power, he carried out some shocking actions. Let’s explore what happens in this movie. Make sure to watch it till the end—you will definitely enjoy this story.

The Beginning of the Story

The story begins with a brilliant scientist who had created a formula capable of completely making a human or an animal invisible. However, while this formula could make someone disappear, it could not restore them to their original state. That’s why Sebastian had been working for the past 11 months to create a formula that could bring invisible humans or animals back, so that he could safely test his invisibility serum on a human.

Sebastian's Dark Intentions

Even today, Sebastian is working on his formula. After many failed attempts, his gaze falls on a girl in the window. She is changing her clothes, and Sebastian watches her very closely, with a dark intention, as if he desires her. This scene clearly shows what kind of person Sebastian really is.

Success with the Formula

After some time, he finally succeeds in creating the formula that can restore an invisible being. He calls a scientist from his team, Linda, to share the success. Then he calls the rest of the team to the research center to test the formula. They choose a chimpanzee named Isabelle, who had been invisible for the past 11 months, as the test subject. Everyone gathers at the research center, and they inject Isabelle with the new formula. As soon as the serum spreads through her body, she writhes in pain but soon calms down, and her body becomes visible again. Sebastian’s team is overjoyed at seeing her restored.

Secrets in the Pentagon

A few days later, during a Pentagon meeting, Sebastian tells the officers that they succeeded in making the animal invisible, but failed in bringing it back. In reality, Sebastian had already succeeded in restoring the animal but kept it a secret because he needed more time from the Pentagon. When Matt and Linda ask why he lied, Sebastian says that if the Pentagon knew the research was complete, they would have stopped the funding.

Testing the Formula on Himself

Now it was time to test the formula on a human, so Sebastian decides to experiment on himself. He had not taken permission from the Pentagon, so he convinces Linda and Matthew to cooperate with him, while deceiving the rest of the team. Finally, the day arrives when Sebastian tests the serum on himself.

At first, he doesn’t feel any effect, but suddenly he experiences intense pain, and his heartbeat stops. After some treatment, his heartbeat returns, and the serum starts working. Gradually, he calms down and becomes completely invisible. Everything seems perfect—his dream has come true. He begins to enjoy the power, teasing and playing pranks on the lab’s female staff.

Lab Surveillance and Invisible Mischief

Since Sebastian was mentally unstable and had perverse tendencies, he was kept under surveillance using a thermal camera. The plan was to keep him invisible for three days and then restore him using the formula. During these three days, someone always stayed in the lab to monitor him.

On the first day, Sarah stays to watch him. At night, she falls asleep, and Sebastian takes advantage of the situation, moving close to her and misbehaving. Sarah senses something and wakes up, thinking Sebastian is nearby. She checks the camera, sees nothing, but he silently returns to his bed as if nothing happened. Sarah suspects Sebastian, but also wonders if it might have been a bad dream.

The next day, Janice is in the washroom and hears a flush. She quickly looks through special glasses but sees no one—this continues for three days. During this time, all the female staff sense invisible harassment, realizing it must be Sebastian.

Formula Fails and Sebastian Escapes

When it is time to restore Sebastian, the serum fails to work, leaving him invisible for several days. Matthew and Linda prepare a mask so that Sebastian can appear visible in front of others, but he is still restricted from leaving the lab. Matthew and Linda continue working on a new formula, while Sebastian grows restless due to confinement.

Finally, he escapes the lab and goes to his apartment. Seeing the girl he had been watching before, he cannot resist his perverse impulses. Free from the lab’s surveillance, he spies on her while she is bathing and later enters her apartment when she opens the door. She is unaware of his presence, and he harasses her. Meanwhile, Linda discovers Sebastian’s absence and finds his mask, realizing something is wrong.

Chaos and Violence

Sebastian returns to the lab before Linda can confront him. When questioned, he lies and promises not to leave again. One night, Linda receives a call from Matthew, who says he found a new formula, but it fails during testing. Sebastian becomes increasingly frustrated that the team cannot restore him.

Enjoying his invisibility, Sebastian begins going out at night, harassing women and causing havoc. He damages the thermal camera and loops his sleeping video so that the lab thinks he is still there. He observes Linda and Matthew at home, and jealousy and rage overtake him. He smashes their glass window and sets off a chain of events that leads to chaos in the lab.

Sebastian kills a dog out of anger and continues to become more violent and unstable. He begins eliminating the lab team one by one, first Janice, then Carter, Sarah, and Frank, while trapping Matthew and Linda in a deep freezer to die. Linda constructs a makeshift electromagnet to open the freezer and saves Matthew.

Final Confrontation

Sebastian attempts to destroy the lab with bombs made from sulfuric acid and other chemicals. Linda attacks him with fire, but he survives. During the fight, Sebastian is shocked by electricity, severely injured, and partially visible. The lab explodes, and he grabs Linda’s ankle as she escapes in an elevator. He asks her for one last kiss, and she distracts him and disconnects the elevator cables, causing him to fall into the fire and die.

The Moral of the Story

In the end, a scientist blinded by ego, obsession, and perverse desires pays the ultimate price. Misusing his discovery, he crosses the limits of humanity and dies trapped in his own web. The story demonstrates that those who defy the rules of science may face the most dangerous consequences.

Production

After the controversial Starship Troopers, director Paul Verhoeven aimed for a commercially appealing film. The movie's budget was $95 million, with $50 million dedicated to visual effects, managed by Sony Pictures Imageworks and Tippett Studio. Principal photography began in April 1999, and filming included stunts and complex effects for invisibility. Elisabeth Shue was injured during shooting, halting production for seven weeks.

The film was one of the few allowed to shoot near The Pentagon, with lab scenes filmed at Sony Pictures Studios. Thermal imaging was used to portray invisible characters and animals. Kevin Bacon wore a body suit for complex effects, which were digitally enhanced to create invisibility.

Music

The soundtrack was composed by Jerry Goldsmith. It features electronic effects and piano motifs to accompany scenes of invisibility and suspense.

Release and Reception

Despite negative reviews, Hollow Man opened at #1 in the U.S. box office, earning $26.4 million in its first weekend. The film grossed over $190 million worldwide, making it Verhoeven's biggest hit since Basic Instinct. The movie received criticism for its controversial scenes but was praised for its visual effects.
