Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (2014) - Full Game Explained

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is a first-person shooter video game released in 2014. It is the 11th main installment in the Call of Duty series and was developed by Sledgehammer Games for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. High Moon Studios handled the versions for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, while Raven Software worked on the multiplayer and Exo Zombies mode.

Overview

This was the first game fully led by Sledgehammer Games after they co-developed Modern Warfare 3. It launched officially on November 4, 2014, but those who pre-ordered received early access on November 3 with the special "Day Zero Edition," which included extra in-game content.

Setting and Story

The game is set in the future between the years 2054 to 2061. It follows a U.S. Marine, Jack Mitchell, who joins a powerful private military company called Atlas, run by Jonathan Irons (played by Kevin Spacey). After losing his arm in a war and being discharged, Mitchell gets a second chance at war with a high-tech prosthetic arm and becomes involved in global conflicts, bio-weapons, and corporate conspiracies.

Gameplay Features

Unlike previous COD games, Advanced Warfare introduces a futuristic style of combat. The HUD is replaced with holograms shown from your weapon. New movement abilities like boost jumps, dashes, and Exo cloaks give players more dynamic gameplay. You can also choose futuristic weapons such as energy guns.

Campaign Mode

The single-player story revolves entirely around Jack Mitchell. Players earn upgrade points after missions to enhance their gear such as sprint speed, grenade count, and weapon handling. Cutscenes help carry the cinematic story. Players can also complete side tasks for extra rewards.

Multiplayer Mode

Multiplayer keeps the fast-paced action but adds vertical movement through the Exo suit. The game uses a Pick 13 system for customization, letting players choose weapons, perks, and scorestreaks. Over 350 weapon variants are available. Players can earn supply drops for rewards like skins, XP boosts, and rare gear.

Exo Survival (Co-op)

This wave-based mode allows 1-4 players to fight against waves of enemies on multiplayer maps. Players can choose between four Exo classes and earn upgrades during each round. Special missions like defending zones or gathering intel add variety. Failing these may result in penalties.

Exo Zombies Mode

This mode features fast, deadly zombies wearing Exo suits. It includes four survivors — Oz, Lilith, Kahn, and Decker — trying to escape the outbreak caused by the Manticore virus. The gameplay is wave-based, like previous zombie modes in the franchise, and features four maps across the DLC packs: Outbreak, Infection, Carrier, and Descent.

Main Plot Summary

After a failed mission in Seoul in 2054, Mitchell joins Atlas, led by Irons. As a terrorist group called KVA begins attacking nuclear plants, Atlas rises as a global defense force. Mitchell soon learns that Irons allowed the attacks to gain power. With the help of former allies, he joins a group called the Sentinel Task Force to bring down Irons and Atlas. The story ends in a showdown in New Baghdad where Mitchell defeats Irons, but the threat of Atlas remains.

Game Development

Development started in 2011. Sledgehammer originally planned a Vietnam War-era third-person game but shifted to Advanced Warfare. The game features a mostly new game engine with upgraded animations, sound, and graphics. The same facial tech from Avatar: The Way of Water was used. The game includes both male and female multiplayer characters. High Moon Studios handled old-gen ports, while Sledgehammer focused on next-gen and PC.

Music

The game's soundtrack was composed by Harry Gregson-Williams and audiomachine. The Exo Zombies music was composed by Chris Vrenna.
